IEEE Magnetic Frontiers Conference 2024: Event Highlights

The IEEE Magnetic Frontiers Conference 2024 was held on 15-19 Sep 2024, at Darmstadt, Germany and brought together global experts from academia and industry for four days of insightful discussions and presentations on magnetic materials and sustainability. Chaired by Prof. Dr. Oliver Gutfleisch (TU Darmstadt), the event featured plenary talks, keynote speeches, and poster sessions covering a wide range of topics in magnetic materials including synthesis, advanced characterization techniques, recyclability, and the use of AI/ML to develop efficient and sustainable permanent magnets. One of the sessions was dedicated to industrial perspective of sustainability in the motor industry, addressing the entire supply chain, from rare earth mining to their application in motors, paving the way for greener energy production. Discussions with industry and academic experts offered a global perspective on aspects of manufacturing, recyclability, laws and regulations, economic feasibility, and withstanding challenges associated with using permanent magnets.

The conference also provided opportunities for networking and collaboration through excursions and lab tours, fostering strong partnerships for future innovation. The CoCoMag team was well-represented at the conference, with active participation from the University of Seville, Magnotherm, and Krems University.

Prof. Dr. Victorino Franco and Miss Elisa Guisado-Arenas, from the University of Seville, attended and presented works on magnetocalorics and magnetocaloric high-entropy alloys.

Victorino gave an invited talk titled, “Decoding Magnetostructural Transitions: A Combined Analysis Using TFORC and Thermography”.

Elisa had a flash presentation, followed by an interactive poster presentation on, “Inducing magnetostructural coupling near room temperature in Cu-doped (Fe,Mn)NiSi alloys”. Her work in CoCoMag, designing MM’X alloys into the high-entropy alloy compositional space, had attracted a lot of audience at her poster with great interest from the conference attendees.

Dr. Thomas Schrefl from Krems University shared some insights into “Materials Informatics for Permanent Magnet Optimization”, while Magnotherm GmbH offered its industry expertise through a presentation on “Bringing Magnetic Cooling Solutions to the Market”.

With a focus on sustainable technologies, the IEEE Magnetic Frontiers Conference 2024 showcased the latest research and developments in magnetics, including the findings in CoCoMag project, setting the stage for ongoing advancements in the field.
